Cathy Burton

Cathy Burton approaches song writing and performing like one of those unexpectedly brilliant street painters that seem to only ever appear in the biggest tourist hotspots. Just watching the process of creation is as rewarding an experience as savouring the finished thing.

Starting out as a music scholar, Cathy's craft has been developed over years of study. Teaching piano brought its own lessons, as did working alongside a range of artists in a range of capacities. From scoring to supporting, providing backing vocals to co-writing alongside some serious talent, as well as touring all over Europe and playing the likes of Brixton Academy and Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Cathy's breadth of experience has turned her into a singer-songwriter with plenty to say and plenty of ways of saying it.

Such experience led her to the recording, and release of her debut album, ‘Burn Out’ (2002), followed by ‘Speed Your Love’ (2004) and ‘Silvertown’ (2006). And then, a break.

That four-year hiatus that spans the release of ‘Silvertown’ and her latest release – ‘Source of Every Hour’ - has been full to the brim of life-changing experiences - to include the birth of her two children. Such events cannot fail to influence a songwriter, and Cathy’s move in home and church has seen a subtle, but significant shift in her work.

“I’ve always led worship,” Cathy recalls, “but I never wrote worship songs. There were just so many great writers already writing brilliant songs. Why would I want to try to join in, and fail?

It was only when I went on a songwriter’s course that I felt God challenge me on this: why was I so proud? Why did I think it was a competition? Why was I holding back songs that spoke so directly of God? From then on I changed and started writing songs that could be sung in church as well as out of it.”

Her time with Grace Church Chichester has been key in her development as a worship songwriter. Not only has Cathy been writing because of the church, but she has seen the relationship between sung worship and community in new ways.

Add to that the time that she has spent leading worship at Spring Harvest and singing with worship teams at Soul Survivor and New Wine, and it’s clear that Cathy has developed a finely tuned sense of where the Church’s heart is leaning.

’Source Of Every Hour’ is far more than a collection of songs written in an attempt to guess what  Christians might want to sing in church; it is the result of years spent nurturing and listening to the songs that have emerged in the local church, held together by real struggles, real relationships and real victories.

Watching the maturing of Cathy Burton is a wonderful thing. She always seems able to articulate something of the struggled, hopes and happiness that affect us all. Now it’s time to join in, to sing of what the Redeemer has done for us.
