Prom Praise

All Souls Orchestra has grown to become a leading player in the classical scene. For over thirty years it has brought high-end musicianship and accessible praise together that results in a captivating experience.

Founded in 1972 by the then newly-appointed Director of Music at All Souls Church, Langham Place, Noël Tredinnick, the Orchestra has gone on to develop an internationally-respected ministry. The Orchestra's wide reputation outside of All Souls Church has come mainly through the Prom Praise concerts which they take to major venues around the country, and recordings.

The Prom Praise events have become widely loved worship/concert hybrids. First held at the Royal Albert Hall, they later moved out to other venues, all the time fusing a symphonic musical tradition with a vision for engaging worship music.

“It started in 1977, when All Souls had a massive re-building project and it was going to be open every day," remembers broadcaster and former All Souls Orchestra MC Nick Page. "There was a feeling that as the Sunday was a normal service of thanksgiving that something very special should happen on the Saturday, as a further act of thanksgiving to bring glory to God.”
The events grew from there, quickly gathering support from across the country:

"It must be an occasion when we're creating music that's inspired - in general - by God and salvation music which is the hymns and what you'd call sacred music. These are combined together to give praise to God. We are anxious that this is done in such a way that it isn't just another thing for Christians but that the public can come and understand what we're doing. There's an evangelistic purpose as well.”

Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2007 with a special Easter Gala Prom Praise at the Royal Albert Hall, the orchestra invited guests Stuart Townend, Chris Eaton, Heidi Pegler, Rico TIce and a large Gala choir.

The music played is very varied, encompassing substantial and challenging symphonic works to lively arrangements of contemporary worship songs.

Over the thirty years of its existence the membership of the orchestra has extended widely and now includes members and non-members of All Souls, and has active student participation, all drawn by the desire to share their particular gifts and experience the joy of joining in this unique act of service.

Prom Praise is a delightful blend of sacred and concert music, a unique and joyful fusion of performance with worship, combining the spirit of Songs of Praise with the enthusiasm of the world-famous Last Night of the Proms.
